Power distribution companies in Odisha have amassed a staggering amount of fines from consumers over the past five years. 

According to data presented in the Odisha Assembly, fines totaling Rs 457.49 crore have been collected from consumers across the state.

Odisha Deputy Chief Minister K V Singh Deo, who also holds the Energy Department portfolio, revealed the information through a written reply in the Odisha Assembly while responding to BJP MLA Upasana Mohapatra’s question.

The minister stated that a total of 8.70 lakh consumers have been penalized during this period.

Ganjam Tops The List

Among districts, Ganjam recorded the highest fine collection, amounting to Rs 40.77 crore, followed by Cuttack with Rs 37.70 crore and Balasore with Rs 34.49 crore.

The massive revenue collection has sparked discussions on the financial burden imposed on ordinary consumers by the power distribution companies.

While authorities justify the fines as measures to curb power theft and ensure timely bill payments, consumers continue to voice concerns over steep penalties and billing discrepancies.
