The alleged disappearance of several children from Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in Odisha has come to light, though no official data is available with the Odisha government, informed School and Mass Education Department Minister Nityananda Gond in Odisha Assembly on Friday.

Concerns Raised

The issue was highlighted following a 2017 report by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which documented that many children vanished from KISS and were subsequently found. However, the institute had allegedly not lodged any FIR.

Missing Data and Accusations

The absence of concrete information from both the Odisha government and the Mass Education Department concerning the missing children has sparked concerns. Speculation is rife that the previous administration and bureaucratic channels deliberately kept concealed crucial data, leading to discussion within political circles.

This unfolding controversy underscores the pressing need for transparency and accountability from all authorities involved to ensure the safety and welfare of children in educational institutions.

The state government is being urged to address these lapses and improve coordination with organisations such as the CWC to safeguard the interests of children.

Earlier, the Odisha Soochana Adhikar Abhijan (OSAA) had recently asked why the Juvenile Justice Act was not applied to former BJD MP Achyuta Samanta’s KISS (Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences) even though the institution has students of minor age groups.

The OSAA further questioned why the university has not been brought under the ambit of the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

No comments could be obtained from the KISS authorities in connection with the allegations.
