Following a surge in diarrhoea cases, authorities in Jajpur district have launched a stringent campaign to curb further spread. Binjharpur, Dharmasala, and Vyasanagar have been placed under a temporary street food shutdown, with comprehensive restrictions on the roadside eateries, meat shops, and community feasts, official sources said on Monday.

According to the official sources, in response to rising cases of diarrhoea in the district, local authorities have taken proactive steps to control the situation. The tehsil offices have issued strict directives in Binjharpur, Dharmasala, and Vyasanagar localities, mandating complete shutdown of all Dhabas and fast food, chat, and gupchup vending outlets, including ice cream factories for two weeks.

Additionally, shops selling water packets, fish, chicken, and mutton have also been asked to cease business operations temporarily. This measure aims to prevent the spread of infection through contaminated food and water sources.

Hotels, sweet shops, and snack vendors have been instructed to maintain strict hygiene. Any establishment found violating cleanliness norms might face indefinite closure, warned the three tehsil officials. Strict action will be taken under the law if any of these establishments reopen without administrative permission, the tehsil authorities insisted.

The district administration has also advised citizens to refrain from organising community feasts such as weddings, religious rituals, thread ceremonies, and birthday parties during this period. These precautions are intended to break the chain of transmission and ensure public health safety.

Statewide 'Stop Diarrhoea' campaign begins

Amid rising cases of diarrhoea and confirmed cholera infections, Odisha Health Secretary Aswathy S. visited Jajpur district earlier in the day for an extensive ground review.

The Health Secretary conducted inspections at several hospitals before chairing a high-level review meeting at the District Collector’s office. The visit comes at a time when the waterborne disease has already claimed multiple lives in the district and continues to hospitalise hundreds. The meeting noted that contaminated drinking water is the primary cause, though other contributing factors are also being investigated.

“Water contamination is the suspected primary cause of this outbreak. Several teams are currently investigating the source of this contamination on a war footing. Required vigilance and health safety measures have been enforced in all affected areas,” stated Aswathy S.
