The auspicious occasion of Chitalagi Amavasya will be observed with traditional fervour at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri on Thursday. As part of this unique ritual, the forehead ornaments (Chita) of the sibling deities—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra—will be ceremonially adorned.
In view of the ritual, public darshan will remain suspended for four hours. According to the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), darshan of the deities will be restricted from 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM, following the conclusion of the first Bhogmandap.
As per temple tradition, the Chita, ornaments first worn on Snana Purnima—are reapplied on Shravana Amavasya. Lord Jagannath is adorned with a diamond-studded white chita, Lord Balabhadra with a blue-studded chita, and Devi Subhadra with a ruby-studded red chita.
The rituals will be conducted by the Patimahapatra servitor, who will purify the ornaments before handing them over to the Daitapati servitors for final adornment.
The forehead ornaments will remain on the deities until the next Snana Purnima. Devotees have been advised to schedule their visit accordingly to avoid inconvenience
