A cyclonic circulation currently active over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and its adjoining areas is expected to trigger a spell of widespread rainfall across Odisha over the next four days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned.
In view of this, the IMD issued Orange and Yellow alerts for several districts, while also stating that some areas may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
Weather reports stated that the cyclonic circulation is likely to remain active until at least June 19, affecting weather conditions across many parts of the state. Additionally, the southwest monsoon, which had paused for over two weeks, is also expected to strengthen again starting this week.
Orange Alert for Six Districts, Yellow Alert for Eighteen Others
For June 16, the IMD has issued an Orange Warning for the districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Mayurbhanj, and Balasore.
These districts are expected to experience thunderstorms with lightning, strong surface winds up to 30–40 kmph, and heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two locations.
In addition, a Yellow Warning has been issued for two categories of districts:
Heavy rainfall with gusty winds and thunderstorms is likely in Sambalpur, Deogarh, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Kalahandi, Nuapada, and Balangir.
Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds (30–40 kmph) are also expected in Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, and Malkangiri.

Monsoon Revival After a 17-Day Lull
After a 17-day hiatus, the southwest monsoon is likely to become active again over Odisha. Reports say that the presence of the cyclonic circulation over the northwestern Bay of Bengal is creating favourable conditions for the monsoon winds to advance further into the state.
The monsoon had initially touched parts of southern Odisha in late May but stalled due to weak moisture incursion. With the new system influencing the region’s weather dynamics, districts in interior and coastal Odisha are expected to receive enhanced rainfall activity in the days ahead.
