All the district Collectors have been directed to identify people residing in vulnerable pockets of the State and shift them to nearby cyclone shelters in view of a possible cyclone over the Bay of Bengal around October 23, informed Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Deo Ranjan Singh on Sunday.

Addressing the media following a review meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja for the possible cyclone, Singh said, “All the district Collectors have been asked to identify the people residing in vulnerable pockets and take necessary measures to shift them to nearby cyclone shelters. Besides, they have been directed to inspect cyclone shelters tomorrow and make them ready. ”

“Besides, Pregnant women, whose delivery dates fall within a week, should be brought to the nearest health centres. The next review meeting will be held tomorrow. The administration is ready to face any kind of challenges and we aim for zero causality,” Singh added.

Urging fishermen not to venture into the sea, the SRC said, “I request all the fishermen not to sail into the sea from today until the SRC office releases the next information. Those who are already in the sea should return to the coast at the earliest.”

The low-pressure area will intensify into a depression and move towards the Odisha-West Bengal coast. It may intensify into a cyclone. This is a very dynamic system and we are closely monitoring it, he said.

“Under the influence of the system, heavy to very heavy rainfall activities will be witnessed in the coastal belt of Odisha from October 23 and it will continue till October 25. The coastal districts like Puri, Ganjam and Jagatsinghpur will receive maximum rainfall followed by Kendrapara, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati and Kandhamal,” the SRC informed.

At present, it is not possible to predict the wind speed of the system. I request people to remain cautious but don’t panic, Singh urged.

Notably, the review meeting was attended by the Development Commissioner, principal secretaries of all the departments, DGs of Police and Fire Services departments, ADG Law and Order and all district Collectors.
