The Severe Cyclonic Storm Michaung weakened into a deep depression on Tuesday night as it made its way through north Andhra Pradesh to Southern Odisha.
The deep depression will further weaken into a depression over a few hours from now, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
While there is no cyclone threat for Odisha, under its impact, Ganajam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Nabarangpur districts received heavy rainfall while Malkangiri, Koraput and Rayagada received very heavy rainfall on Tuesday night.
As per the IMD, Ganjam, Gajapati, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri and Rayagada districts will continue to receive heavy rainfall till Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, the Gajapati district administration has announced the closure of all schools today (December 6) owing the heavy rains. All the primary, upper primary, high schools and anganwadi centres will remain closed today.
It is pertinent to mention here that the cyclone is slowly weakening after making landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday evening. During the landfall process, the severe cyclonic storm passed with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.
While the weather is likely to change today, the officials have been asked to submit a damage report at the earliest. The Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), Satyabrata Sahu said, “There is no cyclone fear for Odisha as it has made its landfall in Andhra Pradesh. I have instructed the officials to submit a damage report once the rain subsides. Compensation will be provided after examining the report.”
