Cyclone ‘Dana’ damage assessment: Central team to arrive in Odisha on November 24

A Central team led by Home Ministry Joint Secretary P.K. Rai will assess the damages caused by cyclone 'Dana' in Odisha districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, and Kendrapara. The team will remain in the State from November 24 to 27.

A Central team will arrive in Odisha on November 24 to evaluate the damages caused by Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Dana’, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari informed on Wednesday.

The team is scheduled to reach Bhubaneswar on the stipulated date and will remain in Odisha till November 27 to fully assess the post-cyclone situation. Led by Home Ministry Joint Secretary P.K. Rai, the team will tour the cyclone-affected areas of the State.

The seven-member team will first visit Bhadrak district on November 25, followed by a visit to Balasore and then Kendrapara. After completing their district visits, they will return to Bhubaneswar on November 26 to hold discussions with officials, sources said.

The Central team will also pay a courtesy visit to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

“Based on damage assessment report of Odisha Government and the Central team’s report on post-cyclone situation after verification of the damages, the cyclone assistance money will be released by the Central Government,” the Revenue Minister said to media persons.

“State government is making efforts for a permanent solution to the damages being caused every year by natural disasters. We are trying to build cyclone-resilient infrastructure and houses with the support of the Central government,” the Revenue Minister expressed.

It is pertinent to mention that the Odisha Government had released on November 6, a total of Rs 423 Crore as compensation against damages caused in the districts affected by ‘Dana’.

As per the reports received from different districts, at least 41 Lakh people belonging to 11,637 villages under 131 blocks of 14 districts were affected due to the cyclonic storm.

Earlier in a press meet, Revenue Minister Pujari had said, “Three districts have been majorly damaged including Balasore, Bhadrak, and Kendrapara. Balasore is worst affected and it is more due to floodwater rather than the cyclonic storm,” the Minister had added.
