In a dramatic mid-air incident, a doctor from Cuttack’s prestigious SCB Medical College turned saviour when he performed CPR on an elderly woman and saved her life during a flight.
Dr. Jyotirmaya Nayak, a surgery specialist from the Department of Surgery at SCB Medical College, was traveling from Bhubaneswar to Jaipur (Rajasthan) via Delhi late at night to attend a medical conference. Around midnight, panic struck when an elderly passenger suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness mid-flight.
Dr. Nayak, who was seated nearby, rushed to assist. Acting swiftly, he administered CPR on the spot, helping stabilize the passenger before the flight landed. After the plane touched down, the woman was immediately taken to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.
A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread appreciation and praise for Dr. Nayak’s presence of mind and timely intervention, with many calling him a ‘real-life hero’.
“We were on our way to Jaipur, Rajasthan via Delhi to attend a conference. We were sitting on the third row. The woman came at around 1:30 AM and fell unconscious all of a sudden. We were all asleep. People rushed to her rescue when she fell unconscious. She was then put to rest on a seat. Her daughter and husband were also with her,” informed Dr. Jyotirmaya Nayak, Surgery Specialist, SCB Medical.
He added, “The air hostess then announced for a doctor for help. So, I tried to help with a basic check-up. The air hostess then handed me a BP machine. However, the woman’s BP was low. With no other option on the flight, I performed CPR on the patient. After a few minutes of CPR, I checked her BP again, and it was around 90. Slowly, the patient revived after 10-15 minutes. The flight was about to land in half an hour, and I suggested they take the woman to a nearby hospital.”
