A day after calling for Bhubaneswar bandh on September 24 against the alleged custodial torture of an Indian Army Major and his fiancee at the Bharatpur police station in the state capital, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) called off the bandh on Monday.

The BJD called off the bandh after the Odisha government ordered a judicial probe into the incident that has rocked the entire nation. After LoP Naveen Patnaik’s demand, the Mohan Majhi government ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident without any partiality.

Soon after the Odisha government’s announcement, BJD also called off the 6-hour bandh that was scheduled for September 24 (Tuesday) from morning 6 am.

“Our former CM Naveen Patnaik had demanded a judicial probe into the incident. He had called for an impartial probe. His demand was a High Court-monitored judicial probe. Now, that the Odisha government has agreed to his demands and ordered a judicial inquiry into the matter, we have decided to call off the bandh scheduled to be held in Bhubaneswar on September 24 (Tuesday),” informed BJD leader Devi Prasad Mishra.

“We hope the government completes the judicial inquiry within 60 days as per the promise,” he added.

Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi personally met the Indian Army Major of the Sikh regiment, his fiancee, and her father at the Loka Seva Bhavan, Bhubaneswar who narrated their ordeal to the CM.

The CM has assured of stern action against the ‘errant’ cops who are currently placed under suspension.

On the other hand, the police association has condemned the Odisha government’s decision to suspend five cops from the Bharatpur police station without any concrete evidence.
