Amidst the ongoing din in Odisha Assembly, Speaker Surama Padhy on Tuesday suspended Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati for unruly behaviour.

The Congress MLA has been placed under suspension for seven days.

The Odisha Assembly Speaker took the action following repeated disruptions caused by the Congress MLA in the House.

On Monday, Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati allegedly broke the podium microphone inside the Assembly, creating chaos.

Despite warnings, the MLA allegedly continued his disruptive behaviour on Tuesday as well.

While reacting to his suspension, Congress MLA Tara Bahinipati said, “It is injustice and Congress has decided to stage dharna throughout the night in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue inside the Assembly campus. The suspension is illegal and it is an attempt to suppress the voice of the Opposition and kill democracy.”

Bahinipati further said that BJP leaders, Babu Singh, Jayanarayan Mishra and others who misbehaved and attacked me should have been suspended.

“The decision is not fair. The BJP lawmakers hold my shirt collar, assaulted and abused me and no action was taken against them,” alleged the Congress MLA.

Congress MLA Sofia Firdous said, “The Speaker post assumes significance and the language she used is condemnable. The senior leaders of the BJP misbehaved with the

Congress MLA in the House. The decision is unfortunate. We will stage a demonstration throughout the night till the suspension is withdrawn.”

In his reaction, BJD MLA Arun Sahoo said, “Today, we want to clearly state that it is the responsibility of the government and treasury bench regarding the function of the Assembly. The Speaker had earlier warned to take action when no incident had taken place. BJD had staged a demonstration against BJP lawmaker’s statement. We had demanded a statement from the CM on the matter. We were told that Deputy CM would give a statement, but a Cabinet minister gave a response.”

Sahoo said that when we demanded a statement from the CM, attempts were made to forcibly run the House.

“The democratic rights of the Opposition were curtailed. Congress MLA opposed the way the House was being run forcibly. It was during that time when BJP MLA rushed to the well of the House and held the Congress MLA’s shirt collar,” alleged Sahoo adding that the Speaker should be impartial.
