Independence Day celebration on Friday turned tragic in Bhubaneswar after a Class 8 student drowned while his friend went missing while bathing in the Daya River. The incident occurred at Dalakhai Ghat, within the limits of the Dhauli police station.

According to reports, the victims were students of a private residential school in the area. A group of students had gone to the riverbank to bathe in the morning. While engaged in the activity, two students accidentally slipped into deeper waters and were swept away by the current.

Local residents immediately alerted the authorities, and a team from the Fire Services Department rushed to the spot. After a search operation, the body of one student was recovered from the river. Efforts are still underway to trace the second missing student.

Police sources said the body recovered has been sent for post-mortem examination, while rescue teams, including divers, continue their operation to locate the other student. The incident has left the school community and local residents in a state of deep shock and grief.

Authorities have urged people to exercise caution near the river, especially during the monsoon season when water levels and currents can be unpredictable. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
