The Odisha Assembly faced another day of disruptions on Thursday as the Opposition BJD and Congress resorted to protest, bringing the proceedings to a standstill. Soon after the morning session began, BJD MLAs stormed into the well of the House raising slogans over the Polavaram project.
The BJD submitted an adjournment notice concerning the Polavaram issue. However, the notice was rejected, prompting continued demonstrations from BJD members. Amidst the uproar, the Speaker adjourned the House till 11:30 am.
“We will continue to fight for Odisha. Will they not douse the flames if their house is in fire just because the matter is under sub-judice? Andhra is increasing the height that will eventually deprive Odisha of water. So, we want to discuss this in the House,” claimed BJD MLA Arun Kumar Sahoo.
Congress Protest Continues:
Meanwhile, the Congress legislators also boycotted the Assembly session today, opting for a sit-in protest near the Mahatma Gandhi statue instead. The demonstration comes in response to the recent suspension of several of their members, with demands for immediate revocation.
In a symbolic gesture of dissent, Congress legislators adorned black armbands as they participated in the protest. Joining the protest was Bhakta Das, the President of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), who has called for the immediate withdrawal of suspensions for Congress members.
BJP Reacts:
“Today, BJD had given an adjournment motion on the Polavaram Project issue. There are senior lawmakers in the party, so they should know that we cannot discuss the issue as the matter is sub-judice in court as per the law of the Constitution. Unnecessary scuffle, avoiding question hours and discussing the issues of the people of Odisha is ‘neech politics’. The people of Odisha are all watching us and they will give the right answer,” claimed BJP MLA Irasis Acharya.
