Asia's largest brackish water lagoon Chilika registered a spike in arrival of migratory birds this year as compared to last year.

As per the census that was conducted on Wednesday, the lake saw arrival of total of 11,31,929  birds this year of which 10.93 lakh are migratory birds.

This year’s arrivals were over 57,000 higher as compared to last year.

According to sources, a total of 184 species of birds were traced in the lagoon during the census. Moreover, highest 3.42 lakh birds were spotted in Nalabana Sanctuary.

As many as 21 teams comprising over 100 staff carried out the annual head counting exercise. The census was carried out in the five ranges under Chilika Wildlife Division – Balugaon, Tangi, Nuapada, Rambha and Satapada.

The teams were provided with two-way radios (walkie-talkie), binoculars, GPS scales and cameras for the annual counting of both the domestic and migratory birds.
