Rampur Police in Odisha’s Sonepur district seized Rs 12.15 lakh in cash from a four-wheeler vehicle during a routine checking drive on the Barpali–Rampur road near Sarasamal Chhak in Dunguripali block. The vehicle, travelling at high speed, was stopped by Rampur police as part of an ongoing checking operation.
Suspicious Bag Leads to Discovery of Cash
Upon inspection, the police found a suspiciously heavy airbag inside the vehicle. Suspecting foul play, officers opened the bag and discovered neatly packed bundles of currency notes in denominations of Rs 500, Rs 200, Rs 100, and Rs 50.
The four individuals in the vehicle, Bhabanni Shankar Barik, Sachin Khatua, Dhirendra Majhi, and Brudaban Kunwar, were detained on the spot.
Rampur IIC Padmasini Meher said, “Our police team stopped the vehicle for checking and found an airbag inside. The bag felt unusually heavy, prompting the team to investigate further. Upon opening it, we discovered bundles of cash. When the four youths in the vehicle, including the driver, failed to give a satisfactory explanation for the money, they were brought to the police station for further questioning.
However, they could not provide any credible details regarding the source or purpose of the cash. Suspecting that the money could be linked to a theft, we forwarded them to court.”
As the youths failed to provide any valid explanation regarding the source or purpose of carrying such a large amount of cash, police registered a case and forwarded them to court. The origin of the money is currently under investigation.
