The construction of a significant flyover linking Jagatsinghpur with Paradip has been subject to criticism due to extensive delays. Situated near the Chapada railway level crossing, the project was launched two years ago. However, progress has been lackluster, with less than 50% of work completed, much to the dismay of the local populace.
Residents have voiced their dissatisfaction with the alleged administrative inefficiency and a lackluster approach by contractors. The delay has been attributed to allegations of bureaucratic negligence and the contractors’ sluggish pace.
“Most of the time, the gates are closed due to the passing of any train. Even two trains pass at the same, forcing people to wait for no less than half an hour. They don’t understand that students, emergency patients, and office-going people also get stuck,” alleged a local Prabhat Kumar Sahu.
Likewise, another local Suprabhat Lenak said, “We have to wait for more than half an hour, both at the time of going and coming. This way, we lose one hour of our daily lives. If someone wants to reach a place, then he/she cannot reach on time.”
Incomplete Bridge Project
The flyover, which spans approximately 300 metres, is a joint endeavour by railway authorities and the state's Public Works Department (PWD). Despite two years, the ambitious project is lagging, with more than half of the project yet to be completed.
On the other hand, the construction involves two separate contractors, raising questions about how much longer the project will take to finally see the light of the day. Furthermore, the absence of any form of signage has left the public without any information on the budget, timeline, or the identities of the contractors.
Daily Commutes Disrupted
Travellers at the railway level crossing face significant delays as trains continue to pass through with the gate remaining closed for extended periods.
For local residents heading to the market, the gate closures mean prolonged wait times, both when going to the market and returning home. The issue becomes more critical for those in ambulances, transporting patients in urgent need of medical care. Commuters, including office employees and schoolchildren, regularly face tardiness due to these disruptions, making it particularly problematic during emergencies or when time-sensitive tasks are at hand.
When contacted, J. Sonal, District Collector, Jagatsinghpur said, “Efforts are on to expedite the construction work. I agree commuters face problems due to the gate closures. But, efforts are on to complete the project as soon as possible.”
