A new chapter was added in the glory of Odisha’s health sector as five organs of a 43-year-old man from the State, who was declared brain dead, were donated to four patients in different hospitals across the country giving them a new lease of life.
Though Prasannajit Mohanty from the Rental Colony area in Bhubaneswar left his earthly abode, his family members gave a strong message to society by donating five of his important organs. In the process, history was created in Odisha as five organs of a person were donated after his death for the first time.
As per reports, Prasannajit was badly hit on his head in an accident on June 22, 2023. His family members immediately admitted him to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. After conducting various tests, doctors came to know on the next day that Prasannajit was brain dead. Subsequently, an apnea test was conducted twice and it was confirmed that the patient was brain dead.
After getting a request from the doctors for organ donation, Prasannajit’s wife Mrudumanjari Mohapatra immediately discussed the matter with all the family members and eventually, they agreed to donate five organs of the patient after his death for transplantation to needy patients.
“I pray before God that those patients who have got a new lease of life with the transplantation of my husband’s organs live a long and healthy life,” said Prasannajit’s wife Mrudumanjari.
Meanwhile, Prasannajit’s younger brother Satyajit has revealed that his brother had the wish to donate his organs selflessly even before he was brain-dead.
“He used to tell us about his wish to donate organs when he was alive. We are satisfied to fulfill his wish. Our brother died, but due to the donation of his organs, four patients got new lives,” said Satyajit.
After getting consent from the family members, the process for organ donation of Prasannajit started at the hospital with the help of the State Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation (SOTTO), Regional Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation (ROTTO) and National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation (NOTTO).
A team of 20 doctors carried out the surgery for four-long hours to retrieve two kidneys, two lungs, and liver from Prasannajit’s body for transplantation into other needy patients’ bodies.
Two kidneys were transplanted in the bodies of two patients at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack and Sum Ultimate Hospital respectively. Prasannajit’s two lungs gave a new lease of life to a 16-year-old patient in Kolkata who was living in ECMO support for the last one and a half months.
Prasannajit’s liver was sent to a private hospital in New Delhi by creating a green corridor. It was successfully transplanted in a patient who was struggling for his life.
As per the doctors, it was the first instance in Odisha in which multiple organs were retrieved and transplanted successfully.
“We are grateful to Mrudumanjari for giving us her consent to donate his husband’s organs. For the first time in the history of Odisha, five organs of a brain-dead man were retrieved and those were successfully transplanted with the patients in different hospitals across the country,” said Sum Ultimate hospital CEO Swetapadma Dash.
