BMC issues new guidelines for street food vendors in Bhubaneswar

To ensure proper sanitation, consumers’ health, and cleanliness, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday released a new set of guidelines for all the roadside food outlets in Temple City.

“All the food outlets under BMC are requested to follow the new guidelines to ensure safety, cleanliness, and health concerns of the consumers,” the BMC said.

  1. All the food outlets have been directed to mandatorily obtain food licenses. 

  2. From now on, the food vendors will have to wear headscarves, masks, and gloves while serving food to the customers. 

  3. They should wear clean clothes with apron on top.

  4. The BMC has also directed the outlets to not serve food to customers on use and throw plates, but only use steel plates, spoons, cups, and other utensils.

  5. Keep all the food covered.

  6. Use oil paper over the plates before serving food to customers.

  7. Provide proper drinking water and use safe water for the preparation of food. 

  8. Religiously change the water that is used to clean the plates and other utensils.

  9. Eateries have been advised to keep two dustbins – one for dry and another for wet residuals.

  10. Keep the shop and surrounding area clean and hygienic. 

  11. Do not serve stale food to the customers.

Besides, for tea vendors, the BMC directed them not to serve tea in use and throw cups and instead use clay cups. The guideline also stated that food outlets having the required parking space have to follow the sanitation protocols. 

Any deviation from these instructions will be viewed seriously and BMC will take all measures to impose a fine and shut the shop with the cancellation of trade license.
