BJD leader Shreemayee Mishra’s ‘Dhritarashtra’ remark: Did she just target Naveen Patnaik?

Though Mishra did not name anyone, speculation is rife that the BJD leader indirectly took a dig at her own party president and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

BJD leader Shreemayee Mishra has stirred a debate in Odisha politics with a sharp reference to ‘Dhritarashtra’- a ruler of the ancient Kuru kingdom who was born blind. She took to social media platform ‘X’ to express dissatisfaction, indirectly targeting an ‘unfit king’.

Though Mishra did not name anyone, speculation is rife that the BJD leader indirectly took a dig at her own party president and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

In her post, Shreemayee drew parallels with the Mahabharata, recalling how King Dhritarashtra presided over the assembly during Draupadi’s humiliation but remained silent. She noted that the king’s blind affection for his sons, especially Duryodhana, prevented him from stopping the injustice.

“Some people, like Dhritarashtra, turn blind and fail to stop wrongdoings. History never forgives such unworthy kings, as their silence leads to tragic consequences,” she said in her post.

“When someone who humiliates women raises slogans of women empowerment, people only laugh. When a person who climbs the ladder of injustice tries to portray himself as a symbol of justice, people only laugh. When one who cannot take decisions for himself speaks of nation-building, people only laugh,” she told in a facebook post.

Commenting over Shreemayee Mishra's social media post and the 'Dhritarashtra' remark. Biju Mahila Janata Dal president, Snehangini Chhuria said, “Shreemayee Mishra is with us. Naveen Patnaik has entrusted her with important responsibilities. On social media, we express our personal thoughts and it has no connection with the party.”
