In a bid to strengthen surveillance and track miscreants and traffic violators ahead and during the Hockey World Cup, the Commissionerate Police has put CCTV cameras in as many as 147 intersections.
As per reports, 528 closed circuit cameras have been installed at 147 traffic intersections in Bhubaneswar and all the data is monitored and analysed at the traffic control room inside the Police Commissionerate building.
Speaking on the security arrangements in view of the Hockey World Cup, an official in charge of the command and control centre said, “Apart from the cameras at all major intersections, we have also set up control rooms at nine hotels in Bhubaneswar where the teams are staying.”
“The PCR vans will attend any incident tracked through the CCTV cameras. We have mobilised extra police force to improve our response time in case of any untoward incident during the World Cup. The hockey teams have been provided with extra piloting vehicles, liasoning officers who have VHF devices with them to report their movement.”
In a span of just weeks, the law and order situation has gone for a toss in Bhubaneswar after a series of crimes and vandalism were reported.
Recently on Sunday, more than 30 miscreants came in a bus and vandalized a bar at Chandrasekharpur area in Bhubaneswar. While the police arrested 34 accused the next day, the incident raised serious questions on the effectiveness of police patrolling in the city.
Similarly, an engineering student was allegedly abducted and beaten black and blue by miscreants in Bhubaneswar on Monday. He was later rescued from a crematorium ground at Jatni in the midnight.
