President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 Awards at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on Thursday.
According to official sources, in a proud moment for Odisha, Bhubaneswar secured the 9th position in the Swachh Survekshan 2025, India's annual cleanliness survey conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The State Capital was evaluated in the category of cities with a population between 3 lakh and 10 lakh.
Last year, Bhubaneswar was placed at the 34th position, but improved its ranking drastically this year, reflecting enhanced civic management, better waste handling, and increased public participation.
The jump showcases sustained efforts by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and public cooperation in achieving better sanitation and hygiene standards.
Officials attribute the success to improved solid waste management practices, door-to-door garbage collection, and ongoing cleanliness awareness campaigns. The achievement adds another feather to the city's cap as it continues its transformation into a modern and livable urban space.
Worth mentioning, Ahmedabad was named the cleanest big city, followed by Bhopal and Lucknow in the Government of India’s annual cleanliness survey, even as Indore, Surat, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada were elevated to a newly formed 'Super Swachh League Cities' category for demonstrating exceptional performance in sanitation.
According to the Government, 14 crore people participated in the survey through face-to-face interactions, Swachhata App, MyGov, and social media platforms in over 4,500 cities.
Seventy-eight awards were presented this year across four categories -- Super Swachh League Cities; Top three clean cities in five population categories; Special Category: Ganga Towns, Cantonment Boards, Safai Mitra Suraksha, Mahakumbh; and State Level Awards -- Promising clean city of a state or Union Territory.
Under the new category 'Super Swachh League', Noida emerged as the cleanest city, followed by Chandigarh and Mysore in the three to 10 lakh population category.
