Drug menace threatens Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, is witnessing a troubling expansion in illegal drug trade activities, with disturbing implications particularly for students from the city's top educational institutions.
An investigation by OTV has brought to light how these narcotics are being surreptitiously sold even in everyday grocery shops.
While once confined largely to impoverished districts, the illicit drug market has infiltrated more affluent areas. Authorities appear to be struggling to effectively manage the situation, despite efforts to conduct raids and dismantle networks in areas such as Cuttack.
Within these shops and clandestine compartments, code words are reportedly being used to distribute these drugs inconspicuously.
Adding to the complexity, products like ‘GoGo paper’ are being utilized as drug-related paraphernalia. These thin papers are used to roll substances like cannabis, which, along with brown sugar, is being openly sold on many of Bhubaneswar's streets, affecting university students profoundly.
As night falls, secret gatherings transpire in isolated locations where individuals plan illicit activities. Despite actions taken by local law enforcement, including the Excise Department, to combat the practice and increase awareness, drugs such as cocaine, opium, and marijuana continue to spread unchecked amongst the youth.

Through the investigative operation, ease of access to these substances was captured on film, revealing vendors openly selling these dangerous wares.
What officials say
However, officials are of the opinion that steps are being taken to address the issue, balancing enforcement measures and community-oriented initiatives.
"They are using amphetamine, cocaine, and even higher versions like angel dust and LSD. These are readily available everywhere. Those who have obsessive-compulsive disorder get inclined out of curiosity," said Bishwajit Panda, chief of a de-addiction centre.
"We have been continuing raids at places near the educational institutions where illegal drug trade is taking place. Whenever we are getting clues, we are taking immediate actions and arresting the persons involved in it. We will also continue it in future," said Excise Superintendent Debasis Patel.
"Along with enforcement, we are also creating awareness at every level. Those who are facing stress and depression, we are also trying to reach them. We are also making the college students aware of how to keep themselves away from drugs," he added.
