The Market Building at Unit-II in Bhubaneswar has been closed for the past one week as the traders have downed their shutters as part of their protest against the alleged inaction of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) to resolve the ongoing dispute between makeshift and permanent vendors.
As per sources, the Market Building Traders’ Association has been alleging encroachment by the makeshift vendors and demanding their eviction.
As per their allegation, the street vendors are destroying the beauty of the market area and making it crowded. The association had urged the BMC to take necessary action.
When BMC didn’t take any action in pursuance of their demand, the association decided to shut the market building for an indefinite period.
As per reports, the Unit-II Market Building Traders’ Association will discuss the matter with more than 50 other traders’ associations at a meeting in the Capital City on Sunday.
The Traders’ Association has further alleged that BMC is not trying to solve the issue though the Market Building has been closed for the past one week.
As per BMC sources, they have to consult with legal authorities about the issue before taking any action and it is a long and time-consuming process.
On the other hand, people are facing a lot of trouble as the Market Building has been closed for the last seven days.
“We depend upon the Market Building to buy different stuffs as those are only available at various shops on its premises. We are clueless about why it is shut for such a long period. We have no alternative but to return empty-handed,” said a customer.
