Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday announced a financial package of Rs 50,000 for each 'Bhagabata Tungis' across Odisha.  The financial assistance will infuse life to this ancient tradition, said sources.

There are a total of 7,200 Bhagabata Tungis in the state.  Their development will be looked after by the Department of Odia Language, Literature and Culture.

The Bhagabati Tungi, a small cottage, is a part of Odisha’s rich cultural fabric. The villagers assemble at this cottage every evening to discuss matters relating to religion and culture. This is the place where religious scriptures, particularly the Bhagabata, are recited. This not only makes tired villagers relax but also helps keep the villagers united.

In this digital era, such places were struggling for their existence. The financial assistance will go a long way in preserving such rich culture.
