Talsara MLA Bhabani Shankar Bhoi was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

Bhoi was elected uncontested, as no other candidate from the Opposition had filed their nominations for the post. Bhoi succeeded Saluga Pradhan in the post.

“I declare that Bhabani Shankar Bhoi, honourable member of the House, has been chosen as the Deputy Speaker of the House,” announced Speaker Surama Padhy.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik congratulated Bhoi for his election as the Deputy Speaker.

“I congratulate Bhabani Shankar Bhoi on being elected as the Deputy Speaker of Odisha Legislative Assembly. I have full confidence on him that he will maintain the dignity of the House and conduct the functioning of the House in the right manner,” said Majhi.

“I congratulate Bhabani Shankar Bhoi on being elected as the Deputy Speaker of this august house. I am sure that with his rich experience, he will be a successful Deputy Speaker. I request all the members to support Bhoi wholeheartedly,” said Patnaik.

Bhoi filed his nomination papers for the post in the office of the Secretary of the Assembly in the presence of Deputy Chief Ministers KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling and other Ministers and ruling BJP MLAs on Tuesday.

Notably, Bhoi has won the reserved Talsara Assembly seat in the last two elections. In the 2024 General Election, he defeated BJD’s Binay Kumar Toppo by over 17,000 votes.
