According to sources, a bizarre incident unfolded in Gopinath Sahi under Belaguntha police limits, where a woman died following a vicious honey bee attack. The deceased has been identified as Jhunu Pal, a resident of the locality.
Jhunu was plucking fruits from a Guava tree near her backyard when she unintentionally disturbed a beehive. In a sudden swarm, hundreds of bees flew out and launched a fierce attack, stinging her repeatedly. Jhunu collapsed on the spot due to the severity of the stings.
The woman’s family quickly came to her rescue and rushed her to a hospital in Belaguntha. As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the Bhanjanagar health facility for advanced treatment. However, she succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment.
The unusual nature of the incident has left the local community shocked, and it has also raised concerns about the presence of large, unmonitored beehives in residential areas.
Earlier in another incident, a spiritual gathering turned chaotic on April 14 when a swarm of wild hornets (locally known as Baghua Mahu Machhi) had launched a sudden attack on a crowd of devotees at a Shiva shrine in Chandragiri village of Gajapati district.
The incident had occurred amidst the Maha Bishuba Sankranti celebrations, a day that saw hundreds of devotees visiting the temple for darshan and rituals.
