Trouble mounted for the Balasore man after an FIR was lodged at Kamarda Polie Station based on the complaint filed Bangladeshi woman who has accused him of cheating.
As per the complaint, Ruma Mariam from Amtoli area in Bangladesh had married Birendra Pratap Bhanja from Buddhakusumi village under Balasore’s Kamarda police limits following a love affair over Facebook.
Mariam claimed Bhanja reached Bangladesh six years back to meet her after a brief love affair on Facebook. Their ‘Nikah’ was solemnised at a mosque in Bangladesh. However, Bhanja left for Odisha and never returned to her, she alleged.
It is pertinent to mention here that Bhanja is married to another woman and he stays with his family at Budhhakusumi village.
Mariam had landed at Budhhakusumi village searching for Bhanja on December 3. She demanded to be recognised as Bhanja’s legally wedded wife.
Meanwhile, Bhanja’s family members said that for the last six years, the woman has never called or tried to contact them. They suspect some ulterior motive behind her sudden appearance and demand for wife status.
As per Bhanja’s family, he was working in West Bengal’s Digha five years back. That might be the time when Mariam could have come in contact with their son (Barendra).
Police sources said Mariam could not show any evidence to prove that they were married.
Asked about the incident, a law expert said, “Police should first investigate how did Mariam came to India if her Visa is valid. I heard she has come on a medical Visa. If true, then where was she treated? Appearing suddenly after six years and claiming to be the wife of a man makes her suspicious.”
It is pertinent to mention here that Bhanja has gone incommunicado after Mariam arrived at his village and his mobile phone is also switched off, police said.
