A massive flooding in Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga river systems in Balasore district has left a trail of destruction in the district. Though water level in the rivers has receded, several villages in different blocks in the district are still marooned.

While the people in the flood-ravaged region are busy recovering their belongings trapped beneath the mud, the farmers are staring at a bleak future as several acres of agricultural land with paddy crops have suffered an extensive damage due to the floods.

“All our hard work was washed away in the floods. It will take another 15 days for the water to get completely drained out. The paddy crops have been completely damaged,” said a farmer.

Echoing the same, another farmer said, “I have invested all my savings and borrowed money for the farming this season. Like me, many farmers will incur heavy loss due to the floods.”

Notably, as many as 35,654 people from 141 villages in five blocks of Baliapal, Basta, Bhograi, Jaleswar and Balasore Sadar in the district have been affected by the floods.

While 21,085 people from five blocks of Balasore district were evacuated to safety, 130 houses have been damaged in the calamity.
