Babita Patra on Monday took charge as Chairperson of the Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (OSCPCR). Patra, after taking charge, assured that all kinds of necessary steps will be taken for the development and security of children in the State.

"We will work as per the instruction of the Chief Minister. Our priority and importance will be the security of children. We will work for the development of children in the education, health and social fields. We have witnessed some crimes against children in the state in the past and roadmaps are being prepared for those cases. As Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida is also a Minister in this department, we will hold discussions with her on how to accelerate our work in coming days. It's definitely an important responsibility. As children are the future of the nation, their development will be a tough challenge for us," Babita said.

Terming the death of the minor girl, who recently succumbed to her injuries after allegedly setting herself ablaze at Phiringimal village, under the Gaisilat police station limits of Bargarh district, as unfortunate, Patra said that these kinds of incidents are disturbing.

"After taking charge, we were discussing about the incident. We will hold discussion about the matter with the district committee and seek an investigation report . Necessary actions will be taken and we will take a decision about it. Our Commission will definitely work on how to stop suicides among children. The Commission will work not only in the physical but also the mental aspects of the children," said Patra.

"We will prepare a roadmap for the mental development of the children at Anganwadi centres or Sishu Batikas. The government has taken many steps in this regard and we will add few more things into it. Discussions in this regard are going on. We will ensure speedy justice for  the children. Children are not only tortured physically, but also mentally. We also have to give importance to it. Our Commission will try to reach in every rural and remote areas and work effectively," she further said.

"We will hold discussions with the Law Minister on how to give stern and exemplary punishments against the criminals indulged in crimes against the children so that others in the society will be scared to repeat such things," she added.
