Opposition BJD and the state unit of Congress on Friday launched a broadside against the ruling BJP over the appointment of Yogesh Bahadur Khurania as the new Police DG.
Opposition BJD and Congress targeted the ruling BJP over Odia ‘Asmita’ (identity) issue following the appointment of the non-Odia official as the head of the State police force.
“You (BJP) have appointed two non-Odia officials in two most important posts in the State. Have they been selected by the CMO or by the non-Odias in PMO? BJP should make it clear before the people of Odisha,” said BJD leader Lekhashree Samantasinghar.
“If we really love Odia ‘Asmita’, Odia people should be given importance. Odia officers will be able to understand Odia language and the sorrows of the Odia people. They will be able to serve Odia people well. Persons coming from outside will not be able to give proper justice to it. If Odia ‘Asmita’ issue is being raised, Odia people should be given priority,” said Congress leader Ashok Das.
In response, BJP said that appointments are made in police and administrative services based on skills and cadre.
“There are less number of Odia IAS and IPS officials. Moreover, appointments are also made based on seniority and efficiency. BJD has not done it during their tenure. Effort is being made to protect Odia ‘Asmita’,” said BJP leader Agasti Behera.
