Even as local residents and some outfits have been opposing the shifting of deer from the Deer Park in Tulasipur of Cuttack, the Mayor of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), Subhash Singh informed that all deer will not be shifted citing that the park is an important heritage of the Millennium City.
As the population of deer in the park is on the rise, the animals are facing constraints in terms of space and food. The authorities concerned decided to shift the animals to Chandaka.
Till date, over 100 deer have been shifted to an enclosure in Chandaka sanctuary. Another reason for relocating the animals is that the license of the park was scrapped long ago.
As for the issue, the CMC Mayor said that there were only six deer in the park, but their number increased to 292 over the years. “The pride and glory of Cuttack is also linked to the Deer Park which is over 40 years old. The Deer Park will not be shifted fully,” he said.
He added that about 10 to 20 deer will be kept in the park. “We are looking into the legal aspects of the proposal. We have started the process in this regard. We are building an enclosure by spending Rs 1.5 crore in Chandaka. The deer will stay inside the enclosure for at least six months before being released into the wild."
