In a concerning revelation, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday informed the Assembly that 72 students from government and private schools and colleges have died by suicide in the past five years in different parts of the state.

The Chief Minister’s reply came in response to a question raised by Congress MLA Sofia Firdous.

Possible Reasons of Suicides

According to the official data, from 2020 to 2025, multiple factors contributed to these tragic incidents.

Chief Minister Mohan Majhi elaborated on the possible reasons, highlighting issues such as mental stress, harassment by accused individuals, psychological imbalances, restrictions on phone usage in school hostels, academic pressure, misunderstandings with friends, family disputes, romantic entanglements, and exam-related depression.

The disclosure has raised concerns among policymakers, educators, and mental health experts, prompting discussions on the need for enhanced student support systems, mental health awareness programs, and policy interventions to mitigate such incidents in the future. Authorities are expected to take necessary steps to address this alarming trend and ensure a safer, more supportive environment for students.

Why Mental Wellness is Crucial for Students?

Mental wellness plays a vital role in shaping a student’s academic performance, emotional stability, and overall well-being. In today’s fast-paced and competitive world, students face immense pressure from academics, social expectations, and personal challenges. Without proper mental health support, they may experience anxiety, depression, and feelings of hopelessness, which can lead to extreme consequences like suicide.

Promoting mental wellness in educational institutions is essential to creating a supportive and nurturing environment. Schools and colleges should implement counselling services, stress management programs, and peer support groups to help students cope with stress. Encouraging open conversations about mental health and reducing stigma will enable students to seek help without fear of judgment.

Parental involvement is also crucial in identifying early signs of distress and providing reassurance. By fostering a culture of care, understanding, and professional support, we can ensure that students feel valued, heard, and empowered to navigate challenges without resorting to harmful decisions.
