Potato prices likely to stabilise as 300 trucks with fresh stock to reach Odisha from Uttar Pradesh

The prices of potatoes in markets in Odisha are likely to stabilise with the imminent arrival of 300 truckloads from Uttar Pradesh, the Minister of Food and Consumer Welfare, Krushna Chandra Patra informed on Sunday. Speaking to media persons, Patra stated that the consignment is expected to arrive by tomorrow.

This strategic move comes as a bid by the state government to address fluctuations in potato prices, affecting consumers across Odisha. By sourcing potatoes from Uttar Pradesh, the state aims to ensure a steady and affordable supply to its populace.

“At least 300 trucks loaded with potatoes are already on their way. I’m hopeful they will reach Odisha by tomorrow. The potato price has also been under control at around Rs 35/kg. At the most, they are being sold for Rs 40/kg. Prices will go back to normal rates after the trucks unload in Odisha,” Patra said.

With the trucks set to arrive shortly, local traders and consumers are hopeful that the increased supply will quickly stabilise the market prices. Meanwhile, Patra warned of stringent action against those involved in the black marketing of potatoes in the state.

"We are committed to controlling the potato prices and ensuring affordability for our citizens," Patra said, emphasising the proactive measures taken by the CM Mohan Majhi government.

On the other hand, Patra came down heavily on West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee for stopping potato export to Odisha.

“As per reports, there are around 7L metric tonnes of potatoes in West Bengal. The neighbouring state requires 5L metric tonnes and can give us the remaining 2L metric tonnes. But, they have stopped trucks coming to Odisha. We are a democratic country. Some states produce more rice, some states produce more onions and some states produce some other vegetables/crops. Every state has its own dominance in something and may lack in other items. We are all dependent on each other,” the minister added.

“So, Mamata Banerjee should not have decided to stop potato export. They should reconsider their decision because it is they who will face the loss as the potatoes will get rotten. The whole country is ours. So, we should think and be friendly with each other,” he added.
