In a tragic incident, at least three labourers lost their lives and two others were seriously injured after being struck by lightning while eating lunch near a canal construction site at Chhatrapur area under Berhampur police station in Balasore on Saturday.
According to reports, five labourers working on a canal project in Chatrapur had sat down to have their lunch when a sudden and intense lightning strike hit the area. The thunderous bolt claimed the lives of two women and one man instantly at the spot.
The remaining two women labourers sustained critical injuries and were immediately rushed to Nilagiri Medical Centre for treatment. They are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. While the health condition of one injured is stated to be stable, the other one is reportedly in a critical condition.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rain and thunderstorms with lightning in some districts of the State during the next five days. The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning in these districts till July 17.

Earlier in May, at least 10 persons died in separate incidents of Nor'wester (Kalbaisakhi) thunderstorms with lightning strikes across Odisha.
The deaths due to lightning strikes included three from Koraput, two from Ganjam, two from Jajpur, two from Dhenkanal, and one from the Gajapati district of the State.
