Cuttack city is facing a major safety threat with as many as 221 buildings declared unsafe. Many of these structures are in a dilapidated condition, with plaster peeling off walls and weakened roofs, posing a serious risk to residents.

The district administration has informed the Orissa High Court about these dangerous structures and issued notices to the concerned parties. Among them are eight government-owned and two privately-owned properties. As per the law, the buildings must be vacated and demolished.

“Over 200 houses have been identified, and we will demolish all phase by phase. Places where development works are being undertaken or structures that are in serious dilapidated condition will be demolished first. Phase-wise wise later everything will be demolished,” informed Cuttack Collector.

So far, 15 criminal cases have been registered, but only two institutions have responded to the notices. The Commercial Tax and GST departments confirmed that 72 unsafe quarters in Badambadi New LIC Colony have already been vacated, while the R&B department has been asked to prepare demolition estimates. Similarly, a status report has been sought on four unsafe quarters in Badambadi High Court Colony.

Despite the notices, people are still residing in several unsafe houses. Some have vacated, while many continue to live there, claiming they will leave soon. Locals have urged immediate demolition, warning that nearby roads and a school could be at risk if disaster strikes.

The High Court has directed the administration to submit a detailed affidavit and status report by September 18 on the progress of eviction and demolition. It has also ordered that criminal cases will be filed against those refusing to vacate.
