Two persons from Odisha were killed in the Howrah-Mumbai Mail mishap on Tuesday. The train derailed in Jharkhand in the wee hours today. At least 20 other passengers are reported to be injured in the train accident which occurred at around 3:45 near Barabamboo, around 80 km from Jamshedpur, under the Chakradharpur Division of South Eastern Railway (SER).
Both the deceased from Odisha have been identified as Ajit Kumar Samal and OT Bikash Rao. Both the deceased hail from Rourkela’s Malgodown and Railway Colony.
Sources said that 18 coaches of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharsawan district early on Tuesday. Following the mishap, railway teams were pressed into service to carry out rescue and relief operations.
Several injured passengers were immediately rushed to the nearby hospital. The train operations on the Tatanagar-Chakradharpur section of the South Eastern Railway have been completely halted due to the accident. Several trains have been cancelled, and some are being run on alternative routes.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways has announced Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia for kin of each killed, Rs 5 lakh for those with major injuries and Rs 1 lakh for those with simple injuries.
