A dawn-to-dusk bandh called by Saheed Madho Singh Joint Action Committee over former Jatani MLA Suresh Routray’s alleged derogatory remarks on freedom fighter Madho Singh was observed in Bargarh’s Ghess on Monday.

To curb the school dropout rate, the state government launched a yojana named ‘Odisha Madho Singh Hath Kharcha Yojana’, named after freedom fighter Madho Singh of Ghess area.

While replying to journalists, former Jatani MLA Suresh Routray said, “Who is Madho Singh? He is not from our state. The yojana should have been named either after Madhusudan Das or Gopabandhu Das.  Had it been so, we would have been happy.”

The purported video clip showing Routray giving a statement on Madho Singh went viral on social media.

Taking exception to Routray’s statement, Saheed Madho Singh Joint Action Committee termed it offensive.

Protesting against such derogatory remarks, the Committee observed a 12-hour Ghess bandh on Monday.

“Sura Routray has insulted the freedom fighter. Action should be taken against him,” said Padma Shri recipient Haldhar Nag.

Due to the observance of the bandh, all the shops, markets, other business establishments, educational institutions and government and private offices remained closed. Vehicular movements also came to a halt. Most importantly, Ghess residents extended their support to the bandh call.
