'108 ambulance' workers in Odisha threaten state-wide strike from Nov 1
At least 1,300 ambulances are likely to go off the roads from November 1 as members of the 108 Ambulance Workers’ Association have warned of a state-wide strike over various demands. Demanding reinstatement of 200 of their leaders, at least 5,800 workers have called for the bandh.
According to sources, EMRI Green Health Services (formerly known as GVK EMRI) had got the tender of the 108 emergency services in the state. The company reportedly hired 6000 employees after deducting Rs 590 each from them out of which 200 employees were made leaders of the Ambulance Workers’ Association.
The leaders were selected in each district to fight for the rights of the ambulance workers and raise voices against discrimination. Meanwhile, the company has reportedly refused to rehire the 200 leaders, leading to the demand for a cease-work period starting on November 1.
“A contractual company named GVK alias EMRI Green Health Service has got the tender of 108 ambulance services in Odisha. We had chosen around 200 leaders in each district to represent us and ensure our employees' safety, security and address problems. However, the company has intentionally fired them from their services this year,” alleged Sriramchandra Acharya, secretary of the Ambulance Workers’ Association.
“On October 30, we will turn off the GPS and go off roads. But, we will continue to provide off-road services. If our pleas are not heard by them, we will call state-wide indefinite strike from November 1 and hit the streets,” he added.
Off-duty employees will reportedly meet district collectors and Chief District Medical Officers (CDMOs) of at least 30 districts and submit memorandums demanding fulfillment of their demands.
“If our demands are not addressed, we will provide the emergency services by switching off the GPS on October 30 and then begin the cease work agitation from November 1,” the workers warned.
