Widespread criticism over administrative silence and delayed police action has gripped Jajpur district, ten days after the alleged illegal confinement and harassment of Byasanagar Municipality Executive Officer Pradeep Kumar Padhi.

Amid questions as to why no arrests have been made, Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan sternly remarked that the current administration takes law and order very seriously and ‘anyone found guilty of disturbing peace will be punished’.

Executive Officer Allegedly Harassed for Hours

As per official accounts and the complaint filed with the Jajpur District Collector, the Executive Officer was confined for nearly eight hours in his office by a group of councillors, allegedly affiliated with the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

The councillors are accused of threatening Padhi, denying him access to medication and coercing him to sign documents under duress.

While the incident was seen as a serious breach of official protocol and personal safety, despite the gravity of the accusations, none of the named councillors were arrested, raising concerns of political shielding.

Law Minister Responds Amid Mounting Pressure

In an interaction with the press, Law Minister Harichandan addressed the issue for the first time, asserting that the government will take appropriate legal action.

“The government’s priority has shifted to more pressing matters, including the Puri Rath Yatra. However, this government does not shield anyone, and those guilty will be dealt with stern action,” he assured.

Earlier in the matter, BJD councillor Ashok Raut had alleged that a ward was knowingly deprived of benefits by Padhi. “Ward No. 6 had made its demands in front of the government, but they were removed from the Annual Action Plan presented to the council members. We want accountability,” he alleged.
