Lucknow: Under opposition pressure, Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday said she has no objection to a CBI inquiry into the murder of Lakhimpur teenaged girl, even as the Allahabad High Court told the state government to give a status report on the CB-CID probe into the incident.

"If the family of the victim wants a CBI or any other inquiry, my government has no objection. The only fear is that in case of CBI inquiry the probe may get messed up like in the Aarushi murder case," Mayawati said here.

Hitting back at her political opponents for raising a hue and cry over the incident in which the 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered inside a police station, she said, "Whenever any inhuman incident occurs against women, opposition should rise above party politics and help catch the culprits. They should not indulge in dirty politics."

In a related development, the Allahabad High Court directed the state government to submit a status report on the CB-CID or any other agency probe into the incident.

The order was passed by a vacation bench of justices S N Shukla and D K Arora here on a petition filed by a local lawyer seeking direction for a CBI probe into the case.

The petitioner had also sought a direction for paying compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the victim`s family.

Meanwhile, Union Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath pitched for a CBI probe in the case, arguing that conflicting police versions gave rise to suspicion.

"Justice cannot be ensured without a CBI investigation," she told reporters in Delhi.

Another Union minister, RPN Singh, wondered as to how the CID would probe the incident when police personnel themselves are allegedly involved. "That is why we are seeking a CBI inquiry," he said.
