Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday said steps must be taken to ensure a caste-based census, which has not taken place since 1931.

“I am still a votary of holding census on the basis of castes... Steps must be taken for the purpose… the caste-based census has not taken place since 1931,” Mr. Kumar said.

Earlier, he furnished 29 columns of information when Census officials met him, marking the beginning of second round of compilation of details.

He appealed to the people of the State to assist the census officials in conducting the marathon exercise.

“The census will also help the state in further hiking the plan size, and will ensure the benefits prescribed for the people’s betterment,” Mr. Kumar said.

Earlier, the census officials met Governor Devanand Konwar who too furnished the details.
