Nigerian, girlfriend jailed for possessing drug

New Delhi: A Nigerian and his girlfriend along with a city resident have been sentenced to varying jail terms for possessing and exchanging a contraband drug, ephedrine. Additional Sessions Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna sentenced Nigerian Chijoke Smith Okpe and North Delhi resident Akhil Dass to four years in jail each and their woman accomplice Marina to three years in jail after holding them guilty under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Twenty four-year-old Marina was awarded a lesser sentence on the ground that she was a young woman and had no criminal antecedents. "I sentence convicts Chijoke Smith Cope and Akhil Dass to rigorous imprisonment for four years each and fine of Rs 20,000 each. Keeping in view the young age and clean antecedent of convict Marina and also that she is a woman, I am inclined to impose a lesser sentence on her. Therefore, I sentence convict Marina to rigorous imprisonment for three years and fine of Rs 10,000," the court said.

The prosecution case dated back to May 25, 2010, when the police, acting an a tip-off, arrested the trio near St Stephens Hospital and found them in possession of 9.5 kgs of ephedrine. The prosecution told the court that as per the information received by the police, a Nigerian national Smith, involved in smuggling ephedrine from Madhya Pradesh to South Africa was to reach Delhi with a heavy quantity of the contraband and was to meet Dass near the hospital.
