In a landmark moment for Indian policing, IPS officer Sonali Mishra has been appointed as the first woman Director General of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), an organization with a 143-year legacy. She officially assumed charge on Friday, marking a historic first for the railway security force.

A Trailblazer with Three Decades of Service

An 1983 batch IPS officer from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, Mishra brings with her over three decades of distinguished service. Her appointment has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, and she will serve in the role until October 31, 2026.

Known for her professionalism, leadership, and dedication, Mishra previously held the roles of ADG (Selection/Recruitment), ADG of Police Training & Research Institute, and Director of the Madhya Pradesh Police Academy in Bhopal.

National and Global Credentials

Beyond state policing, she has also served with elite organizations like the CBI, BSF, and held a key role in the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo. For her exemplary service, she has received both the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.

Vision for a Safer Railway Network

The Railway Ministry praised her appointment, calling it a pivotal step in modernizing and strengthening the RPF. Under her leadership, the force is expected to focus on cutting-edge technology, human trafficking prevention, and protection of vulnerable passengers.

Upon taking charge, Mishra expressed gratitude and reaffirmed her commitment to the RPF's values of vigilance, courage, and service.

With this historic milestone, Sonali Mishra not only breaks a glass ceiling but also inspires a new era of inclusive leadership in India’s security landscape.
