Smart meters to undergo security check
After security checks on CCTV cameras, the Indian government may expand the ‘trusted source’ mandate to other electronic equipment like smart meters, parking sensors, drones, and even laptops and desktops. This comes amidst growing concerns over Chinese imports and fears of threat following Israel's pager blasts against Hezbollah militants.
This initiative aims to reduce dependency on Chinese imports and address security concerns. The agencies need to certify before they can be used by Indians or other manufacturers, government sources said.
“The idea is to build a trusted supply chain for electronic goods as we do not want any weak links that can be tapped by foreign firms given that we are in a hostile neighbourhood,” TOI quoted a source.
After the mandate for CCTVs, mainly imported from China, the government plans to bring other electronic devices under similar regulations. The commerce department has already extended the import monitoring system for laptops and computers.
The idea is to keep a close tab on devices that pose fear of data being shared with foreign agencies. As a result, cameras and other equipment require mandatory certification by designated labs.
After electronics, the government may introduce additional restrictions in the coming months.
