Odisha today joined nine other states in the country to have a full-fledged policy for the sunrise sector - the electric vehicles. The State has set an ambitious target of accomplishing 20 electric vehicles per 100 vehicle registration when as of date, the electric vehicles carve only 0.06 percent of total vehicles on road in the State.
As per a Niti Aayog report, Odisha has a total fleet of 4831 electric vehicles (EV) on road. EV's with a battery capacity of 2W takes a lion share of 75 percent. A total of 3682 2W EV's are on Odisha roads. Due to the low density of EV, the State has only 18 EV charging stations at present.
The State seems to be a late starter in EV transport sector, as neighbouring states like Bihar and Chhattisgarh have a higher electric vehicle density of 26,469 and 5,969, respectively.

Comparative Analysis: Odisha has a Long Way to Go
- The EV policy of Andhra Pradesh has highly focused on promoting supply (manufacturing) and EV charging stations/ battery swapping stations. The policy does not envisage any subsidy or incentives to EV buyers. But Delhi provides so.
