As tanks rumbled and boots marched across the borderlands of Punjab’s Tara Wali village during Operation Sindoor, a massive military mobilisation near the India-Pakistan border, one unlikely hero emerged not in uniform, but with a heart full of courage and hands full of lassi.
Meet Shravan Singh, a 10-year-old boy whose unwavering spirit and boundless patriotism earned him more than just the admiration of soldiers, it won him a place in their hearts.
More Than Just a Witness
While many watched from behind closed doors or trepidatiously peeked over village fences, Shravan did something few dared. As troops camped on his family’s farmland in Ferozepur district, the young boy ran out every day under the scorching sun, delivering water, milk, lassi, and even ice to soldiers who stood guard.
“I wasn’t scared,” Shravan said. “I want to be a soldier one day. I brought them water and lassi. They treated me like family.”
Army’s Tribute to a Brave Heart
His selfless acts didn’t go unnoticed. In a heartwarming gesture, the Indian Army honoured Shravan in a special ceremony. Major General Ranjit Singh Manral, GOC of the 7th Infantry Division, presented him with a memento, a hearty meal, and his favourite treat — ice cream.
“They gave me food and ice cream. I’m very happy,” Shravan beamed. “I want to serve the country like them.”
His father, Sona Singh, a farmer by profession, looked on with pride. “He never missed a day. From the moment they arrived, Shravan stood by the soldiers, and we stood by him.”
A Small Boy, A Giant Heart
Shravan’s story is a touching reminder that service to the nation doesn’t always come with stars and stripes. Sometimes, it comes with a glass of cool lassi on a blistering summer day — offered by a boy who simply wanted to help.
A Name Etched in Patriotism
While Operation Sindoor will be remembered for its strategic brilliance and military strength, it is Shravan Singh — a child of the soil — who has added a deeply human chapter to the story. In an age of cynicism, he has reminded the nation that true patriotism begins with kindness and that sometimes, heroes come in the smallest of packages.
