Amidst nationwide outrage over the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, a video of the late Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray has resurfaced, drawing renewed attention.

In this video, Thackeray asserts that terrorists should be eliminated without legal proceedings and that Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals should not be allowed to reside in India. These statements align with his longstanding hardline positions on national security and immigration.

Balasaheb Thackeray’s Views on Terrorism and National Security

Thackeray was known for his uncompromising stance against terrorism and his belief in decisive action. In a 2008 interview with India Today, he criticized the Indian government's approach to Pakistan, stating that issuing warnings was ineffective and that India should take direct action against Pakistan. He also expressed support for individuals accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts, arguing that if others could support convicted terrorists like Afzal Guru, then Hindus should support those accused in the Malegaon case.

Stance on Pakistani and Bangladeshi Nationals

Thackeray consistently opposed the presence of Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals in India, especially Muslims. In a 2012 interview published in The Hindu, he stated that he would not tolerate Muslims from Pakistan and Bangladesh residing in Maharashtra and suggested that he be given charge of the Indian Army to root out Pakistan-sponsored terror.

In earlier statements, he emphasized that his opposition was not against all Muslims but specifically targeted those he considered anti-national or involved in terrorism. He argued that such individuals should be expelled from the country

Context of the Resurfaced Video

The reemergence of Thackeray's video follows a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, where 26 people were killed, including 25 Indian nationals and one from Nepal. The attack was claimed by the militant group Kashmir Resistance, believed to be a front for Pakistani-based organizations like Lashkar-e-Taiba. In response, India has taken several measures, including downgrading diplomatic ties with Pakistan and suspending the Indus Waters Treaty

Thackeray's statements have historically sparked controversy, reflecting his hardline approach to national security and immigration. The resurfacing of his video amid renewed tensions highlights the enduring impact of his views on India's political discourse.
