Boosting its operational capabilities, IndiGo will establish a major Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport.
According to reports from The Indian Express, the airline signed an agreement with Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) for this project, for which IndiGo will commit Rs 1,100 crore to build this state-of-the-art centre on a 31-acre site.
Facility Capabilities and Scale
Reports added that the new MRO will significantly boost aircraft servicing capacity, featuring four main hangars, which can accommodate four wide-body aircraft simultaneously. Alternatively, they can handle eight narrow-body aircraft.
A dedicated paint hangar is also included, along with a paint facility that can service one wide-body or two narrow-body aircraft at a time.
Strategic Investment and Job Creation
Notably, this investment marks a strategic expansion of IndiGo's in-house MRO capabilities. The project is expected to generate substantial employment, generating over 750 direct jobs across engineering, logistics, warehousing, and support services.

Boosting Airport Capacity and Ecosystem
The MRO facility will elevate Kempegowda International Airport's capacity as it is projected to handle an estimated 1,300 aircraft by the 2031 financial year. This capacity is expected to scale to approximately 2,100 aircraft by 2037-38.
The agreement between IndiGo and BIAL extends beyond the MRO facility, with understandings for network expansion, infrastructure enhancement, and joint marketing initiatives, representing a significant step in bolstering India's domestic aviation infrastructure.
