Search operations in landslide-affected areas in Wayanad enter 6th day
Search operations have been intensified in different parts including the Mundakkai region in Wayanad district in Kerala for the sixth day. Rescue operations have been intensified to search for the survivors. Army officials, Navy, NDRF and other volunteers are trying to search for life using high-tech equipment and heavy machinery.
The Chaliyar stream which passed through the forest took the violent form and swept whatever it came in its way. The torrent of mud and water washed away everything in its path. The villagers said that the population of Mundakkai village is over 1,000. But now only stones and some trees are left in the village. Some claim that the area has a casualty of around 164 persons.
On Saturday, the Kerala forest department officials managed to rescue four toddlers and their parents belonging to a tribal community who had been stranded in a cave.
A four-member team led by Kalpetta range forest officer K Hashis braved incessant rain and rocky terrain to rescue the tribal family which included four kids aged between one and four. The rescue mission took a total of eight hours of trekking.
As per reports, the family from the Paniya community was stranded in a cave atop the hill overlooking a deep gorge amid dense forest for five days.
