The Karnataka government faces mounting criticism after some police officials reportedly stated that they cannot deport 15 Pakistani nationals in Uttara Kannada district, despite a central directive following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 Indians.

The controversy has ignited fierce debates online, with netizens accusing the Congress-ruled state of undermining national security for cheap politics.

Why The Karnataka Police Says So

In response to the attack, the Union Home Ministry mandated states to deport Pakistani nationals within 48 hours, exempting only Hindus on long-term visas.

However, Uttara Kannada police clarified that 14 Pakistani women married to locals in Bhatkal and one individual in Karwar hold valid long-term visas (renewed biennially) and cannot be forcibly expelled.

Their pending citizenship applications, unresolved for years by the central government, further complicate their status.

Bhatkal’s Unique Demographic Sparks Outrage

According to reports by The New Indian Express, Bhatkal hosts 14 Pakistani women integrated into local families. These women entered India legally post-marriage, with some awaiting citizenship since 2010.

Meanwhile, an Indian woman in Honnavar awaits a Pakistani visa after marrying a national there. As of the latest reports, Karnataka houses 88 Pakistani nationals, with 84 on long-term visas and four on short-term permits.

Netizens In Anger

Social media erupted with accusations of Karnataka ‘sheltering terror sympathisers,’ with hashtags like #DeportPakNationals and #KarnatakaPakistani trending. Critics argue the state’s reluctance contradicts national security efforts, citing Bhatkal’s past links to terror modules.

Some also accused the Congress government in Karnataka of taking anti-India moves just because of differences in political ideologies with the BJP government at the Centre.

Karnataka’s cases involve Muslim women legally wed to Indian citizens. Officials emphasise that deportation is legally untenable without a visa expiration or a denial of citizenship.
